Security Simplified: Going Password-less, Strategy

Briefly, the goal of password-less authentication is to eliminate the use of passwords and reduce the security risk of password protection. Adopting this approach requires time for organizations to process these changes and technologies that support password-less authentication. Organizations need to fully understand the strategy of implementing the approach alongside their flow of operations. This requires a new mindset. Organizations have to make the necessary technical and cultural changes to simplify the process for users, so they can productively operate in the new password-less work environment.

This is a 3-step strategy for implementing password-less authentication into your multi-factor security:

Step 1.  Choose the right technology

  • Find and implement replacement technologies that are alternatives to passwords, which address the shortcomings of passwords while acknowledging the positive attributes.
  • This initial step is all about developing an alternative to passwords and getting users familiar with it.

Step 2.  Understand how it works

  • Stay informed and understand how password-less technologies reduce security risks and overcome security challenges.
  • Adopting these technologies will upgrade the user’s experience by setting up a new device, provisioning an account, and using the account and device to access apps and websites.
  • Employees also need to be deconditioned from providing a password any time a password prompt shows up on their screens.

Step 3. Increase user adoption

  • Create a test simulation of a password-less environment. Enable end-users and IT admins to replicate password-less authentication in a test work environment, making the transformation easier and smoother.
  • The simulation can start a cultural shift in the organization and get users accustomed to never typing, changing, or remembering a password.
